Since American mainstream wrestling audiences weren't exposed to lucha libre and the mask wearing guys until him (and others), it was fresh and exciting, and the look and style of the guys was interesting. Rey stood out among the crowd of them and got way over.
But now, since Rey has become a huge name, another high flying masked guy like him will be viewed as a ripoff. Of course Rey didn't start the masked look/style, but he represents it to mainstream viewers.
So they'd have to be completely different or they'd play second fiddle.
Maybe wrestling fans who just got into it in the past 7 years or so but WCW had alot of masked wrestlers and tried to represent Lucha Libre for quite awhile. Also, TNA World Cup represents Mexico rather well, at least it did last time I watched.
