Just because it's a hilarious show doesn't mean they can't have deeper more meaningful things happen to expand the characters and storyline.. Like in season 3 when Ed Truck died and they had the bird funeral.. What Pam said wasn't funny at all but it showed she is like a mother character to Michael.. They've always done things like this..

I don't see how you are confused by it..
