Can I go for TNA's 'Fight for the Right' tournament from 2006? Granted it's not one match but that emphasises the overbooking.
For those that don't recall/didn't see it...
Phase 1 - A 16 Man Reverse Battle Royale
1) The participants start on the outside of the ring and fight to get into it.
2) The first 8 in the ring then participate in a normal Battle Royale.
3)The final 2 then wrestle a standard match to determine a winner.
This however doesn't decide a winner per se but in fact decides seeding (e.g. the 1st eliminated is seeded 8th, the winner is seeded 1st) for the next stage.
Phase 2 - Knockout Tournament
The 1st seed fights the 8th, 2nd v 7th, 3rd v 6th, 4th v 5th in one-on-one single elimination matches. Sounds simple, right? Not quite.
The match between Sabin and Shelley (4th and 5th seeds) ended in a No Contest when Team 3D interefered, thus the spot in the second round was taken by...Christian Cage - who wasn't even involved in the first Phase!
And who did Christian fight in that Semi-Final? Not Junior Fatu who had progressed past Robert Roode in the previous round but Chris Harris...who also wasn't in Phase 1.
Anyways, this lead to a Final pitting Kaz v Christian...which ended in a DQ due to intereference.
"Phase 3"
A Ladder Match was then scheduled between the 2 to determine a winner. The match was won by Kaz - who, after all he'd go ne through to win the title shot, lost in a throwaway match on Impact!.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So convoluted and ultimately pointless. Why make Eric Young the Number 1 Seed if he's gonna get beaten in his first tournament match? Why have Cage or Harris drafted into the tournement and not any of the guys that were in Phase 1? Or better yet, why not have Sabin and Shelley bumped through to the Semi's as the 'drew'?
