The flip side to that is that Nintendo's been a juggernaut largely because they were unchallenged for so long. There hasn't been a serious contender since the early 90s. Sony's got the firepower to do it simply by longevity. In a generation or two, they can compete. Because they're a massive corporation instead of a dinky game making company, they can afford to hang in for a couple gens at a loss.

That being said, I think the PSP was kind of dumb and hope any new system they make is better thought out. The idea of trying to push a new proprietary media format alone makes me want to kick the designers in the balls.

However, all it would really take to get ahead is to cement itself as a serious handheld (instead of a wannabe iPod, Game Boy, and DVD player in one), since Nintendo's off doing the "we appeal to people who want to buy a web browser and a calculator instead of games" thing.

Of course, Sony'll probably make a handheld that runs on BD and costs 5,000 bucks just to prove how big a fuckup they are collectively.
