That's fine, but the fact that they made ridiculously similar characters afterwards, and said "nah, they're different" seems incredibly stupid and lazy. It's like they said "hmmmmm should we make this ninja trhe same one as in street fighter II? Nah then we'd have to say where he's been and why he's back. Let's just say that he's spanish, and it's someone else. Alright, high five!"
