I use a program called GSpot (free to download).
Simple to use.
Simply "browse" to the video file on your hard drive that you are having problems viewing. GSpot will then tell you what codec is required.
Google that codec and download it - your file should then play.
Having said that, if you have the latest versions/updates of whatever media player(s) you use then the likelihood of you not having a particular codec is reduced.
