Like you said, In the earlier episodes we could see Tony dealing with his family life (taking meadow to college) and his criminal side…which you liked. But as for the bits you claim were boring…. Don’t you see that even those examples fit right into the whole saga and relate directly to the other side of his life?

The Carmela/Furio story didn't ever peak with an affair (another letdown) = An advantage over films, you can pan out a story.

Tony bought a horse (I was on the edge of my seat for that one) = A factor that distanced himself from his wife (financially) and his crew (emotionally), while making himself actually feel better. It also lead onto another affair, the death of Ralphie and more money.

Paulie got a painting touched up (feel the drama!) = Can go either way. Tony is his boss. How will Tony react if he sees that painting of him as Napoleon?

The guys spent an entire episode talking about Columbus. = The Columbus episode lead onto the deals with the Native Americans, when Furio was about to try and push Tony into the chopper blades etc

I can’t see how anyone can honestly say Season 4 was anywhere as good as 1 or 2. Its like saying Godfather III was "just as good as the first two", which would be a horrible lie. = Well, I cant see how you can say it was boring. I guess at the end of the day, its all down to personal preference.
But I'll say again, its not that it was bad storytelling, they are great at that.

However, most people who have followed the series from the beginning (like myself) would say that Season 4 was boring, not bad, just boiring/dull/unexciting, whatever term you want to use.

You're right its all personal prefernce, but all I can say is that for myself if I would have started to watch Sopranos last season I wouldn't have been hooked. There was too much bitching, not enough action and generally boring plots. The stpory all ties in nicely, and like I said makes sense, but the action that made the show is long gone, which kinda sucks.
