I don't think a redemption in any way cheapens him as a villain. It certainly doesn't as a character, but as far as villainy and serving as a foil go, he is pure evil for two whole movies.
Only Return of the Jedi features the softened, redeemed Vader. Before that he's ice cold

I don't think the events of a sequel really have any bearing on the films that came before it, whether one thinks they enhance or diminish the character.
