It makes more sense from a storytelling perspective. I mean, why introduce a silly and arbitrary element when you can give an important character better closure and a more purposeful arch?
I prefer that Manhattan actually sacrifices something, and his presence on Earth has a lasting meaning, rather than him just taking a galactic vacation for shits and gigs.
Works better for the rest of the characters too.
Just works way better in the movie IMO. Feels resolute
