Yeah, what Jeritron said. They didn't go into what it is, or why they need it, because it's not important. Their world was dying because they were running out of resources. The planet had what they needed so they were there trying to take it.
Doesn't matter what it is.. just that they wanted it because it was worth so much money. 20 mil a kilo, according to a line in the movie. We can assume it is an alternate energy source, as indicated by the 'dying planet' comment.
