But when I started getting into hockey and the NBA I just rooted for Washington teams because it's not like I was "raised" on those sports and I had no predisposition to like any particular team. It just makes sense to root for the home team because you can watch the games and go to them and stuff. It sucks rooting for out of town teams because they are never on TV.

Why is "I'll pick a team that I think I will like" any worse than picking a team that you don't know anything about or care about just because they are local? Seems like a dumb reason to like a team, because it doesn't have anything to do with the team itself.
I get rooting for a team because that's what your dad cheered for or whatever when you were growing up. That is just getting started when you are young, and following the same team your whole life.
I have never rooted for a team though. Everyone around here is a Chiefs fan, and I did not want to follow a team based on the fact that they are my 'state' team or whatever. That's cool if that's what you want to do, but I don't base my sports loyalty on where I live, especially when I'm not from here and don't plan on being here my whole life.
Indianapolis isn't that much farther than KC anyways from here. Twice the drive, but still only a 1 day trip. If I am really going to go to a football game, then I don't mind driving an extra 3-4 hours to see a team I -want- to see rather than a team that's "close".
