Well, he didn't lose the match. He said he would never lose a match. Also, it's probably just to build to Cena winning the belt back, anyway.

Personally, I hope they go with Sheamus keeping the belt through WrestleMania 26. It'd be a nice way to establish him as a beast. Let him go over Cena at the Royal Rumble, before Cena wins the Rumble and jumps over to SmackDown!. Sheamus can then defend the title against Shawn Michaels at No Way Out, uh, Elimination Chamber, while Triple H earns himself a WrestleMania WWE Title match.

We can then get HBK facing either The Undertaker or even Bret Hart (although the latter would be all smoke and mirrors), while Triple H can put over his prize protoge.
