Well I've been a spiderman my whole life but only regularly started collecting the comics around the time brand new day began, because I never had access to a comic store until grade 11.
I think you're right that spider-man works best with a light hearted tone, but stories like New Ways to Die and the Gauntlet prove that he can work with a gritty darker tone. I mean his life still revolves around the death of his uncle, that's pretty dark.
I guess all in all I'd enjoy the movie either way.
