He doesn't need to be popular. In my eyes it's possible to start this feud tomorrow (if their current angles could be wrapped up today).
The fans hate Punk. He's a great heel, and gets great reactions. Ryder just needs to run on that. The fans hate Punk. Ergo, they'll cheer Ryder.
Also, look at Mr. Kennedy Anderson. If there's one thing he has taught the wrestling world is the fans still love a sing-a-long. "Woo Woo Woo" is corny enough to catch on with the smaller children while "You Know It" can work with the older crowd. Add that cheap interaction with the crowd & Ryder and it'll work.
