I was actually not aware of that. I thought there would be a reason. I remember when Stone Cold Steve Austin used to do that, and it worked for him. During his heel face in 2001, he actually went through a phase where he coloured them. I remember him wearing gold, silver and red. When he was a face I think he exclusively wore black -- representing how bad-ass he was. I thought that was a nice touch.
On the current roster, I admire how Mike Knox now wears only black trunks. He used to wear more interesting coloured ones, but since he moved to RAW, I believe, he started wearing all-black, which fits his character. Also, when Charlie Haas is teaming with him, I've noticed he wears his attire which is most black to somewhat match. I don't know how much of this is management, and how much is the actual guys, but whoever made that call -- kudos.
Chris Jericho's change to the shorter trunks was also a brilliant move with his heel turn. It highlights how he no longer cares about being aestetically pleasing, and how he is all-business. I also noticed that William Regal would bust out the full-body attire when he was playing a heel, but when he was called to be a bad-ass (like when he defeated Santino Marella for the IC Title in England), he would go back to the less ridiculous looking trunks.
Caylen Croft & Trent Barreta really need new attire, though. Also, Christian's attire since he has returned -- with the fancy patterning and shit -- just doesn't suit him, in my opinion. Bring back the big blocky "C" in the diamond. I agree about Kane's attire, too. I think he is overdue for an overhaul. His old stuff hid that he is getting older, and was a good parallel to The Undertaker.
