Rumor is the bad winter weather in the East Coast might have helped tipped the numbers in favor of the Superbowl breaking the record since most people would have been at home and less in large groups. Also the fact the Superbowl has been rising steadily the last decade or so in views means it was going to be a matter of time before the record was broken.

Although to be fair, the storylines were interesting for this game since it involved a debuting team in the Superbowl, post-Katrina New Orleans, Drew Brees rise to elite status, Peyton Manning chance to join elite multi-ring winners list, and the Colts chance to join the 3+ titles list.
