Not as often as they add new ones. Baseball and softball, for example, were removed from the 2012 Olympic program while Rugby Sevens and Golf were added to the 2016 program. That is not counting added disciplines. In 2008, cycling added BMX events.
Just an example, in 1932, the last time Team USA won the Olympic Winter Games medal table, there were 42 total medals given out. In 2010, there were 258.
