His name was "Vito." It's very close to your name. Also, you'd be surprised how many straight men like to dress up in women's clothes. He was a very good talent, but the WWE shying away from the gimmick instead of embracing the issues it brings up was typical for them.
On a lower scale level, it was similar to how Muhammad Hassan was such a deep character that got labelled as an "evil foreigner." I don't believe it was ever stated that Vito was gay, but it's just the "cross-dressing" angle to people. It could have at least been used similarly to Goldust's gimmick.
Anyway, I have to agree with those who bring up DX segments and even John Cena. I mean, there's just something so...cheesy about them. Some Diva segments can come up as awkward, too. Back when they used to do stupid "Ice-cream eating competitions" and shit doing the Diva Searches. It wasn't close enough to porn to be hot, and it wasn't treating the women as anything better than objects of desire. I don't know who that would have appealed to, but it was someone with weird fetishes.
