Agreed. But by ignoring his past as "Joey Mercury," you lose the potential gold mine that was his release due to drug issues.
I'm hopeful that this run for Mercury goes well, if just because of all the releases recently, and even Lance Cade's release not too long ago (who was in a very similar situation to Mercury on the sidelines), could at least be taken to mean there is someone high on the guy's work, or some creative plan for him.
They also put a title on him in his WWE debut, too. Even though it was the Tag Team Championship, that's not something they
usually do with guys. In fact, I think every single person who has ever won a WWE title in their debut match is still with the company. From recent memory, anyway:
Christian - Light Heavyweight Title
Gail Kim - Women's Title
Carlito - United States Title
Joey Mercury - WWE Tag Team Titles
Santino Marella - Intercontinental Title
Ted DiBiase - World Tag Team Titles
I might be missing some. Just an interesting piece of trivia, if true, though.
