But it's also a product of the US having limited success on the world stage. You root for America, but when they're eventually knocked out, you can continue to support your heritage. But yeah pretty much every American does this except for the Mexican immigrants who never root for America at all.

This. You have to remember, for people in the US that are fans of forign leagues, our favorite players play for another country.
As an American I root for America, as the grandson of Sweish Immigrants I root for Sweden in everything (though that doesnt do me much good this year) and I am pulling The Ivory Coast as I think Drogba is fucking amazing.
