yeah but its during those travels that you run into the random spots, side missions, hunting, etc. RDR, GTA, Oblivion, and FO3 all have heavy traveling, and its all mostly to show how 'alive' the world is.
You can do those during missions? Silly me, I thought they were only during the free roam, the part where long travel wasn't required.
