Exactly. Not to mention the Aliens mythology works in with the Mayans, in which it is a religious power and centers around an archelogical artifcat.
It was also brilliant to me, since the movie was logically set years later in the 1950s, at the height of the flying saucer craze.
Couple that with The Red Scare, and making the Russians the villains.
I was just a fan of what they did. I didn't see it as any departure from the original format, at all.
