I thought about this. It doesn't make sense. Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum fly into space using a ship that crash landed in the 1950's. The aliens use the same model in 1996. Clearly rolling out new ship lines isn't a priority for them. Though I guess in all the time they've been conquering planets nobody thought to shoot a missile into the blue light so maybe it is time for an upgrade.
