Yashin out 10-12 weeks with wrist injury
12/24/2003
UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CP) - Star centre Alexei Yashin of the New York Islanders is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks after a gruesome wrist injury suffered in Tuesday night's 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Yashin suffered partially severed tendons in his wrist after his right arm was cut by the skate of Flyers centre Michal Handzus during a goalmouth scramble. He underwent surgery and will be in a cast for four weeks before rehabilitation can begin.
Team doctor Elliot Pellman says the injury is not career-threatening and Yashin is expected to make a complete recovery.
``The reality is the injury actually could have been even worse," Islanders GM Mike Milbury said in a statement. ``Still, it's a big disappointment for our team and our fans. Alexei is one of our leaders and had been playing some of his best hockey over the last few weeks. But throughout the history of this league, the good teams have always found a way to step up when one of their top players goes down.
``I know our guys will do the same."
Yashin, who is making $8.4 million US this season, is tied for the team lead in scoring with 24 points including 12 goals in 33 games. The Isles (15-15-2-1) are ninth in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Tampa Bay for the final playoff spot.
