I'm willing to bet it was pretty much THE reason for the change. The WWE's skyrocket in popularity during the Attitude Era was due to the more adult-themed nature of the show; from the language to the violence to the sex. I don't see why Vince would EVER want to change that unless there was a very good reason to do so, and right now the only good reason is because of his wife's candidacy for the US Senate.
