The problem is, what exactly in the core can they give up? Unless they got a ton of really good prospects in return, losing Wright and Reyes doesn't make them better. Santana is hardly to blame for the Mets' struggles, and nobody would take his contract on anyway. Nobody will take on Beltran's $18M+ for next year (and it's a contract year so he could be primed for a big year if he could stay healthy). Nobody will take Bay or K-Rod, either.

Thing is, I'm not sure the Mets' farm will produce enough winning ballplayers to put together a playoff run while Wright and Reyes are still in their prime. Santana's still good but I do fear that one of these years he's gonna get aging pitcher syndrome, his great years have been wasted here.
