Ubisoft developed an experience system where you earned experience points in every mode of Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (if they were not actually the first to do this, correct me). These points led to upgrades that you can use in all modes of the game.
People really liked that.
Ubisoft gave the recent Splinter Cell Conviction the same system, people liked it again. Halo Reach has a new credit system which is essentially the same as the PEC concept where all modes reward you 'money' you can use to purchase effects for your character (which will show in all modes).
PEC is Persistent Elite Creation (or was it Character?), but I see it as Persistent Character. What SvR11 is doing sounds like a similar system. And really, I wouldn't mind it showing up in more games.
