How do you deal with that battle in one or 2 episodes? There's 2 ways it can end. Either Angel and Co. come out on top and "hell is destroyed" and everyone lives happily ever after, or Hell wins and everyone dies. The former ending would be the complete opposite tone of the rest of the series, and the latter ending would just be depressing as fuck. The series went out making the main thrust of the show, these characters' ongoing battle against evil for redemption, literal. They went down swinging, and I was happy.
And in any case, if you wanna see the aftermath, go read the Angel: After The Fall comic series.

The scene when Spike is at a bar and is getting drunk (appearing to get ready for a rumble with anybody who wants a fight), and the next moment he is on stage reciting poetry; cracked me up.
