It's not always about the money, it's about who develops the best players and who makes the wisest moves. Teams with big payrolls like the Mets, Red Sox and Cubs didn't make the playoffs.

I know that but if its NY/PHI again the whole salary cap thing will come up again.
Looking at the payrolls of the teams in the playoffs this year you can really see how spread apart the payrolls are. In the playoffs are the teams with the #1, 4, 10, 11, 15, 19, 21 and 27 payrolls. Doesn't really get much more even than that.
