That sort of thing happens in many other reviews, and it absolutely drives me crazy. "Hey I'm not the biggest ______ genre fan, but here I am reviewing this game!"
If I was an editor, I'd make it a policy that every reviewer open their reviews with background information on their personal experience with the genre, game series, or franchise (in the case of licensed games) to establish some form of peer-to-peer credibility. That way gamers can know off the bat the guy either knows what he's talking about and should be listened to, or if he's totally noob and his comments should be taken super lightly.
That's not to say an outsider's take isn't okay, but come the fuck on.
