"Chicago" was originally an obsecure movie which didn't play in many theaters when it first came out. But once it got the Oscar nod, the movie played everywhere in theaters and now it hit mainstream. From the very beggining I knew it was going to get Picture of the Year.

Chicago had Oscar buzz about it before it was even released. And the reason it was in limited release initially, was because the official opening of the movie was in January. But in order to be eligible for Oscar nominations, it was released in select cities in late December. But granted, once it did win Best Pic, it gained a lot more momentum and box office clout. But that does not mean it was in any way obscure before the Oscar nom and/or win.
