funny you should say this. i was reading an article about this album in one of the rival street press rags this week and they had a pretty interesting quote from ray toro:

"we really tore down the walls about what we could do as a band. there was no worry about using whatever we needed to do to make a song work, no worrying about what instruments we were using - electronics, drum samples, keyboards... whatever it took to make the song special is what we did. that definitely wasn't the case with the previous recordings."

which is pretty much the exact opposite sentiment to what you expressed, heh.
