The Attitude Era was born partially out of necessity in response to the things WCW was doing. Vince acknowledged that he lost touch with the audience and gave the wrestlers more control over how their characters were portrayed.

In this era, I'd say the WWE has reverted back to dictating character direction and depiction and until there is a viable rival to WWE in terms of money, creativity and ratings, I don't think there will be a change because the WWE won't have to change.
