I think that's a matter of opinion and not fact. I consider the original Star Wars trilogy the best stories, and even though he accepted outside influence in scripting and directing of the 2 sequels, he provided the stories, and creative direction.
Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand did a good job directing the actors, and Lawrence Kasdan (and Leigh Brackett) did a good job with dialogue. Particularly the love story between Han and Leia.
But they didn't weave the stories or populate the universe.

Perhaps you mean comics and video games.

Also, I have a hard time calling someone lucky on making a great movie. That story had so much "awesome in it" because he wrote it. Even if the pieces were in place from 30 years prior, he put them there.
It's just as easy to say he got unlucky on Eps. 1 and 2, but I don't think luck is a big factor.
