Well in MLB, he was seen as one of the main reasons why steroid testing took too long and why it was almost impossible for a salary cap to be done. To be fair, Selig was as bad in reacting to steroids while also doing a lot of dumb decisions as well.

I think the main benefit NHL has is since the last stoppage was only a few years ago, its recent enough for the players and owners to notice how damaging it was to the league and would want to do a better compromise than almost doing nothing last time.

The players lost out on money from the current deal but they get a guarantee of a salary floor to combat any chance of the owners being as cheap as is the case with certain team owners in the MLB. They also know the public turned badly against them last time when they were expecting the owners to take most of the public anger.
