It wasn't like it was ever a huge streak, even for a starving fan base.
It was more from perception since 8 points out of 10 and then 9 out of 12 in the 1st 5-6 games made the fans and media believe the team had a strong start when the Leafs actually only managed to not screw up the start of a season.

A lot of people start to suddenly think and believe they are Stanley Cup contenders when in reality the Leafs didn't actually do anything nor show their potential weakness.

Fast forward about a month later and now everyone is disappointed and angry since the Leafs went back to playing the same way they played last year.
