I still see nothing wrong with the system as is. Winning the division should get you a home playoff game no matter what. If the wild card team is any good they should have no trouble beating the inferior division rival on the road (as the Saints will do on Sunday).
Although, the idea of scrapping divisions and taking the 6 best teams from each conference is slightly intriguing. The schedule would consist of 15 games against your fellow conference members, and 1 game against an opponent from the other conference which is based on the previous year's standings (ie: the 2011 season would feature a Pats/Falcons game, a Steelers/Bears game, etc.) - pretty much the only way to ensure than an "underserving" team doesn't sneak in.
