It's not an awful game. I'm making (slow) progress. I just think it could be more fun and beginner-friendly.
There are combos into ultras in street fighter 4 that take over half a life bar.

There really isn't much difference, only that your lifebar is divided among three characters.

Just because the hit count is bigger, doesn't mean you are doing more damage. It is just the vs series style to exaggerate things.

My SSF4 Chun Li's Jumping double Fierce Punch > Crouching Fierce > Spinning Bird Kick > Super Combo does wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more damage than any combo you can do in MvC.

You are looking at the lifebars as seperate entities. If you think of all three life bars as a whole, then you can never do more than a third of damage on any combo. Unless your assist gets caught along with you, which is your own fault, really.

Point is, I think people look at the hit counter and how much life gets taken off a single lifebar. That is not how it's meant to be played. The whole point is to look at the bigger picture and truly play it as a team game, and not just play each individual character, if that makes sense. That is why reviewers are clamoring about the amount of depth. It makes you consider advantages and disadvantages of using this character with that one, and forces you to be creative in how you use characters together.

I was leaning on your side of the fence while watching videos, but after spending some time against kalyx and in training I'm starting to see through illusion of simplicity this game has when you first boot it up.

To be fair, it is easy to miss all that depth at first. It does seem like a combo-a-thon, due to the speed and large hit counter, but like I said, once I took a step back and looked at the big picture things started to come together for me a bit more, and I was really enjoying choosing characters and seeing how they play off eachother.

Give it some time man.
