Charlton 4 Chelsea 2
Friday, Dec 26, 2003
A boxing day nightmare for Chelsea that started to go badly wrong from the very first minute after conceding from a corner on 42 seconds. The day didn't get much better from there although John Terry's equalizing header after 10 minutes promised better things. However Charlton went in at the break 2-1 up after poor defending, not for the last time, and a contentious offside decision gave the home side their second from another close range header.
Eidur Gudjohnson returned from injury at half time and made a difference attacking wise as Chelsea created a string of excellent chances and should have scored more. Unfortunately the defence was having probably it's worst performance of the season and Charlton were incredibly soon 4-1 up following two more defensive howlers. Gudjohnsen's crisply struck drive brought things back to 4-2 and with Chelsea dominating the latter stages of the match an improbable comeback never looked completely out of the question, yet they couldn't get the 3rd to really make Charlton sweat.
One to forget about, very quickly!
