Trust me, it's "stand." My entire family is from that part of the country, and they allllllllll say "cain't" instead of "can't" and "stained" instead of "stand." And what sounds like "the" is the soft "uh" that frequently comes between consonants in that dialect.

He's from North Carolina, people! It's his accent that's throwing you off.
