Hey no dissing Spidey or LOTR.
But yeah. For the most part this season has been good and a big step up from the crap that was season 4. Last week's episode with the dream I thought was really interesting, BUT it was way too late in the season for that type of an episode. It really didn't do much to advance any story arcs except for Tony. And the dream itself took up the majority of the episode.
It seems like since this was originally meant to be the final season, Chase is simply extending the plotlines for a bloodbath with the whole inevitable NY/NJ war in season 6. Maybe if you look at both season 5 and 6 as one long season it will fit better because this season is mainly just setting up for the shit that will go down in season 6. But I've been happy this season mostly and the set-ups have been done well for the most part. Opposed to season 4 which, aside from pretty much the final episodes when Carmela throws Tony out, Ralph dies, and Aidrianna is arrested (that was 4 right?) most of season 4 was pointless. Don't get me wrong, it was still entertaining TV just not in comparison to the previous seasons. The worst episode this season yet has been, as Triple A mentioned, the one about Tony's father's mistress. I mean who really gives a shit?
What some people don't realize about this show, and Chase has stated this in interviews, is that this show is about a family, hence the title. It is essential for us to see how Tony deals with his two families (home and the mob). If the show was ONLY mob-driven, not to say a show like that couldn't have cool things, but, would it still be as entertain as this? I mean, now this is just an assumption on my part, a lot of mobsters are like this, to an extent. They have to try and balance both families. The psychological stuff I don't care as much about as I do the "business" side but I still do my best to understand what is happening and I know why it is an essential aspect to the show. A lot of it can be interesting.
I thought tonight was damn good. The last episode looks pretty good and season 6 should kick ass too. Even if you think an episode is bad, the worst episode of The Sopranos is still usually better than more than half the other shows on TV.
