Plus it's bringing a lot of "adult" themes to mainstream gaming, even if it is in an immature way. Nudity, sex, booze, smoking, violence, language etc. Yeah, most games have a couple of them but it's usually only just in a certain part of the game or in a few different scenes. DNF has them all pretty much through out, as I understand it.
Content like that wasn't something you'd usually see on a store shelf. So for those two reasons, I'd say it is somewhat groundbreaking in the sense that it's opening up the freedoms of what games can do and contain.
In the end, it is just about fun. One of the reasons I don't like these war FPS games is because the fun has been sucked right out of them to make them "real" and "gritty" etc. Plus they all look so much alike graphically and in gameplay that I can't even distinguish between them.

Only games I can recall coming anywhere close to that level of interactivity would be GTA: San Andreas and GTA IV.
