He did something similar with one of my favorite Animes, Space Knight Tekkaman Blade.
He bought the rights, then went to work toning it down, chopping out the violence and nudity and making a lot of the fight scenes repetitive. He then redubbed the series, changing some characters (Maggy from Teknoman used to be a man in Tekkaman Blade). He renamed it Teknoman, and renamed the main character Slade in the US to avoid legal repercussions from Marvel...
And it still was 100000X better than half the shit on TV at the time. Too bad he only bought the rights to one season and someone bought Season 2.

That show, though a bastardized american version, was really cool. I have been meaning to get that series on DVD.
