Oh yeah, I've heard the same at my lectures from College and the ones now at University.

I'm sudying Computer Arts at University, so it is all pretty ironic that I'm not a fan of everything becoming CGI. Though to be fair, I am wanting to take the path of modeling in games, not CGI animating in films.

But at University, the first thing we learn is the absolute basics of animation. The principles of animation, the use of lightboxes and so on. I've made a short animation using the traditional animation methods and honestly, it was very good, fun to do and satisfying to watch the finished product. If I were to go down the path of animation, I'd chose to study traditional animation, even though it is pretty much dying out now.

It's hard work, but it's the good kind of hard work and to be honest, it's nothing compared to animating CGI. To me, I find it to be so hard and tedious. One of the reasons being that you have to create a working rig before you can actually animate. I hate creating rigs, which is where I guess John K is correct about lazy animators, because I'd much rather use a pre-made rig and movements, over actually doing everything from scratch.

So you can see why I'm choosing to go down the path of video game modeling and not animation.

Thanks for the link by the way. I'm going to read it now.
