Ron Washington said that he left off Sabathia because he was on track to pitch the Sunday before the break, making him ineligible to play anyway. Pretty much the exact opposite of what Girardi did last year when he purposely named a shitload of Sunday starters to get as many guys to the ASG as possible.
ESPN had a really horrible article on the whole snubbing and lack of doing what most managers do every year. They "attacked" Washington for trying to make it easier to create the roster than normally every year a manager naming a ton of players who end up an "All-Star" in name only.

The worst was trying to defend Jeter's spot as being well deserved based on his reputation instead of stats but gave Sabathia a reserve spot by taking it away from someone else who actually earned or deserved it this year.
