Moffat likes using relatively ordinary fears. The shadows, cracks in your wall, creepy stone statues....
And you will notice most of these episodes were Moffat. God, I love that guy.
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances are awesome for many reasons. They're dark but charming, with an actual happy ending (Which seems to be really rare in Doctor Who), they introduce Jack (Who is awesome in DW but sucks in TW). The enemy is tremendous, and the backdrop is wonderful. I'd like the new Who from the beginning, and I think Eclleston helped sell me on it, but this was what really got me.
