Considerinf only three steady companions in the RTD era, and an additional two (If you count Rory) from the Moffat era so far, there aren't lot of choices, really.

However, I'd note her popularity is persistent primarily with new Who fans, who may be biased towards her because she's the first companion. I got accustomed to her to the point I was sad to see her go. Until Martha came along, and I was like "Rose Who?"

And admittedly, one of the big things that draws me to Martha is her role as "Not Rose."

Though Donna is better.

Sarah Jane regularly wins popularity contests, which is probably also partially because of her lengthy tenure on the old series.
