It got popular in the first place for what it was, I agree with you and don't believe the entire world's population is automatically turned off by something slightly different and interesting. Making an FPS nowadays seems to me like more of a risk, since the market is so saturated with them. The 4 player co-op idea gives some hope that it may remain somewhat true to the original experience, although it seems inevitable they will watered down what was basically a very violent game (not so much for the violence itself but the fact you were basically a bunch of heartless assassins).
I remember being massively pissed off with the old game when it came out on the SNES and wasn't as good as the Amiga version I played at my mate's house.
