New feature to the series is the ability to play as a 14-year old girl in the Be a Pro or career mode and it all started due to EA and the NHL listening to a letter written by a girl.
Quote:
In the latest iteration of EA's NHL franchise, NHL 12, you will be able to play as a 14 year old girl. No joke and you shouldn't laugh. Chances are she will dominate your candy ass, being the first female to grace the NHL 12 virtual hockey roster. How did this happen? That same girl, one Lexi Peters of Buffalo, NY; was bold enough to write to EA herself. Lexi wanted EA executives to add women players, writing:
“It is unfair to women and girl hockey players around the world, many of them who play and enjoy your game. I have created a character of myself, except I have to be represented by a male and that’s not fun.”
EA initially shot down her request, stating that they would have to get permission from the NHL. While she felt disappointed, little did she know her letter had circulated up to the lead producer, David Littman. Feeling inspired, Littman not only pushed to have women added to the character creation, but also to have Lexi as a default female character.

No Women's leagues or anything else related to women's hockey will be in the game although this wouldn't be the first time a sports game had both male and female players.
