Every person is built differently, and a lot of it has to do with who "likes" you and who doesn't.
In my personal life, I'm a music producer. When I first started out, I was an intern, getting coffee, answering phones, cleaning up after adults in a studio and got treated like utter shit throughout. I slowly came up and while I never kissed any ass, I was able to gain the respect of those who let the ball of shit roll downhill. Now I'm the CEO of my own production company and have people who work under me. You have some guys who would never get to this point because they "wont tolerate disrespect" and couldn't get through that phase.
It's all relative, I think. It works for some people, it doesn't for others. I used to hate politics when it worked against me. Now it works for me and I love it.
